Weekendish

Spent Sunday in the forest around Mt. Hood, and the berries are ripe! These huckleberries were perfect, tangy tart and sweet. I filled my pockets and popped them in my mouth as I walked.

I started thinking back to a time when people only had access to sugar from things like berries and honey. Can you imagine how precious these little guys would be?

Ok, so, funny story: I have no photos from this past weekend to share.

At first I told myself it was because I’m still getting used to carrying around a camera and pulling myself out of the moment enough to consciously decide to make images. In other words, I gave myself a pass, try harder next time, yadda yadda.

And then it dawned on me: I hate being told what to do. Even by myself. I rebelled against the eensy deadline imposed by a once-weekly blog column. I’ve decided to find this amusing rather than pathological, and simply carry on with my efforts to take more photos.

Because it would suck if knowing I don’t like being told what to do = stop telling myself what to do. Then the knowing would be the boss of me. Or something. And we can’t have that.

We did it! We finished the movie screen for the side of the barn. There we are with our dirty toes, relaxing and enjoying the look of our handiwork.

On Sunday we had a big party to celebrate the mister’s 31st birthday, and inaugurated the screen with his favorite childhood movie, The Empire Strikes Back. And bonus—instead of being annoying, all the explosions of neighborhood fireworks blended perfectly with the movie.

We learned some valuable lessons for the next film showing, which include:

Don’t Stretch the Speaker Cords Out Across The Lawn Whilst Children and Dogs Are Running About.

There is No Such Thing as Too Many Blankets.

There is Such a Thing as Too Much Food.

Another busy week ahead, with new shipments of jewelry to both Unfurl and Presents of Mind, a wedding party to outfit with enamel necklaces, and a new batch of web orders, thank you!

And I’m really feeling the urgency to design a new collection; I’ve got sketches and ideas galore, but still need to block out the time to sit down and see what actually works. It’s that first move that’s the scariest, inevitably discovering that what you thought were your best ideas aren’t really that good, moving through the disappointment, then (calmly, anxiously?) waiting for the next unscheduled flyover of the idea blessing fairy.

The very first head of lettuce at our new house. Crunchy!

Our new friend Cooper came to visit. He liked that rug. Maybe a little too much.

A trip to the Rebuilding Center to buy recycled wood for the next project: an outdoor movie screen for the side of the barn. So geeked out about this!

The Rebuilding Center always has the coolest trucks parked outside.

No trip to the Rebuilding Center is complete without a visit to yummy Por Qué No just across the street. The place is always packed, but I managed to get this shot of the tiny interior right as they opened. Rice and beans!

And per Vera’s suggestion, a jaunt out to Uwajimaya Asian Grocery for new candy to add to your jewelry orders. Get ready for ice tea drops, umeboshi plum suckers, ginger chews, gummy ice cream cones and mystery fruit sweets.

There’s also a great list of ideas going on Facebook right now. So far it’s looking like butterscotch is winning for the next round…

Multi-color California poppies, so much better than expected. These will now be planted everywhere.

Jenn Rawling Trio and Fast Rattler at the Alberta St. Pub. I love seeing shows there, it’s such a mellow scene, and they recently replaced most of the seating with vintage pews. Music church!

Lazy Sunday backyard potluck. I brought these tasty gluten-free cookies.

And the mister went to Colorado for a week. I feel so tiny now in this big old space.

Oh, and this happened.

So many excellent events in Portland this weekend, and I did nary a one of them.

What I did do, was practice being a farmer-in-the-city homebody married lady. Pulled weeds, babied a sick chicken, installed some curtain rods…you get the picture, thrilling stuff.

And as long as we’re being honest, there was more than a little basking in the glow of all the sweet comments on my Cup of Jo giveaway. I must have checked Joanna’s blog at least six times between last Thursday and Friday, and I’m pretty sure I read every last one of the 1560! comments.

It felt good, really good, to see how much you all enjoy my work, to read your generous descriptions of my style. A sincere thank you to everyone who commented. One of my favorites:

In other news, the Portland sky has been all kinds of gorgeous. Behold:

Stumbled across a fantastic vintage/industrial/oddities shop called Seek the Unique. Perfectly curated, I found so many things to linger over, and the owner was incredibly sweet. Turquoise work bench, get in mah studio!

This Saturday was our first 80 degree day this year, and Portland collectively lost our darned minds. Seriously, it was like The Garden of Earthly Delights out there.

We got up super early and went birding with some good pals at the freaking gorgeous Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge. Massive grandpa oak trees, blue skies, birds galore, what more could a girl ask for?

The town of Ridgefield was no slouch in the Saturday department either. We couldn’t resist the small-town farmers’ market (complete with rockin high school band) and a sprawling group garage sale. I bought a real purty jar.

I brought it home, cleaned it up, and stuffed it full of peonies, the most recent flower crush.

And apparently, the birds weren’t through with me, because when I got home, I found this tiny eggshell on the ground underneath our spruce tree.

I admit it, I did squee a bit—how is it possible that an egg could naturally be this blue?

It’s another busy week ahead. Didn’t manage to complete the website tweaks last week, so that’s still on the list, too. I’m trying out this new thing, it’s called “taking the weekend off.” Which does, you know, impact your productivity, but I hear it’s good for you in the long term.
