A little experiment.
I’ll be wearing this new piece for the next couple of days, to see how it feels, to see how I like it. If it passes the test, it will get a pretty name, some fancy pictures, and its own little corner of the website.

Stunning work by the artist Yago Hortal, discovered via rackk and ruin.
What are you all excited about right now? I’m super freaking excited about the Mark Rothko retrospective opening at the Portland Art Museum today. It’s going to be hard, but I think I may wait a few days to visit, so hopefully it won’t be too crowded.
But mostly it’s the little things that I’m finding myself looking forward to, like as soon as I finish this blog post, my mister and I are getting coffee and going thrifting for some vintage dinner plates. Then we’re going to organize our garden seeds and plant some veggie starts. Thrilling stuff, but it makes my heart happy on this grey and rainy day.
So with no further ado, some favorites from the web this week:
An app to make burglars think you’re still home when you’re not.
This sounds like so much fun: Dig up your own Herkimer diamonds.
The world’s tiniest, wee-est, most adorable chameleon.
How companies learn your secrets, a super interesting read.
Sweet and whimsical old world bathroom products.
Gorgeous Art Nouveau apartments. How fun would it be to live in one of these!
Another awesome app: It tells you your size in various brands, based on your body measurements.

Discovering Midwest Alchemy was a real treat. Though the jeweler is based in Ohio, I think that there is a definite Northwest aesthetic happening here. I’m in love with the organic shapes, unique materials, and brilliant pops of color!
Plus, no two pieces are the same, so you can guarantee a truly one of a kind piece. And the worn-in vibes of each necklace and ring insure that you’re getting that “not-too-done-cool-girl” thing that I know you’re going for. (Don’t worry, I won’t tell anyone!)
These are some of my favorites—I think any of them would fit happily into my ring collection.
What about you, dear readers?

(Art by Brittany Bass, via Leif Blog. I also really love this piece.)
It’s a little grim here in Portland as the week comes to a close. Dreary grey and windy, and I’ve got the sniffles. But also: The robins are back! I hear their calls all day long now. And the daffodil tips are poking from the soil. And garden, I’ve got big plans for you, seeds are coming my way in the mail as we speak.
And all my stones from Tucson have arrived, I can’t wait to get lost in new designs. So actually, things here are good. Real good.
What about you? Any exciting signs of Spring in your neck of the woods ?
Some favorites from the week:
Oh hello, Lauren Moffatt Spring collection. One of each, please!
Adorable vintage illustrations. Surprise surprise, I think the pink one is my favorite.
Miss Moss talks about Marni, and I’m all ears.
A paint job that just doesn’t quit.
Woah. Would you, could you, wear these shoes? via Flavorwire
Where do your flowers come from? The slow flower movement.
I love my job. Once again, Emily from Filly says it far better than I ever could.

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner and love is in the air. And if you’re not looking to have an over-the-top, traditional and, well, kinda corny V-day this year, this is the blog for you! Ditch the fancy restaurant and the roses and have some fun!
Because when it boils down to it, you don’t need a lot of hullabaloo if you don’t want it. Whether you spend the day with the love of your life or a group of amazing friends, all you really need is a killer outfit and some great wine.
And don’t forget, you only have one more day to order Minoux for Valentine’s Day delivery, Wednesday the 8th is the deadline.
Cheers!

You guys, I’m back from Tucson and I got so many pretty stones. They’re in mail on the way here as we speak, I’ll share a few pictures after they arrive.
I had the best intentions to take a ton of photos at the gem show, to try and give you a sense of the hugeness of it all. Honestly, it was so overwhelming and so incredibly packed with people, I found it pretty difficult to think about pictures. But I managed a few, and I think these will give you the idea.
Shopping the show amounts to wading through thousands of people in order to edit a handful of stones out of tens of thousands of square feet of this:

At a certain point, your eyes don’t work the same anymore, and you just stop trying to plan out how you’ll use something, and just buy on instinct.
Every year I come home, look at my loot, and wonder what the hell I was thinking about at least half of it. Don’t worry, usually most stones eventually start to make sense and work their way into the designs. Sometimes it just takes a year or three!

When I started thinking about packing for the Tucson Gem Show, I knew I wanted to find the perfect white tee. Thrown on with dark skinny jeans, ankle boots, and the Ochoco necklace, I’d be comfortable for long days shopping the show. And so easy to add on a cozy cardigan or fitted blazer for chilly Tucson nights.
Here are some of the my favorite finds:
J.Crew vintage V-neck
Target pocket boyfriend V-neck $8
Aerie Love T $18.50
Alternative Apparel Araby top $48
Splendid light jersey V-neck $48
If you’re feeling splurgy, Alexander Wang classic jersey T $76
And if you’re feeling not-at-all splurgy, I hear good things about Hanes men’s V-necks. $11 for 5
Got any favorites to add to the list? It’s not that much longer until t-shirt weather for us more northernly-inclined folks, right?
